2009 Smart ForTwo
August 27, 2008
Less than a year has passed since the Smart ForTwo officially went on sale in the United States and with approximately 14,000 smarts delivered to date smart USA are pleased to announce the launch of the 2009 smart ForTwo which is scheduled to arrive this November.
While a small number of changes have been reported, potential smart owners can breath easy as the cars characteristics and personality, which have made the smart so distinctive and popular, will remain the same.
Some of these changes will include two new colors a standard “Rally Red” which will be replacing the 2008 models yellow and an optional “Metallic Gray” which will replace the current “Red Metallic” option.
To accompany these new colors it is also reported that smart will be offering a more intense red interior color option to match the exterior “Rally Red”.
Door storage areas are also due for a change and the current built-in hard cases will be replaced with netting giving a more flexible and larger storage area. This being reminiscent of the smart 450 which was available with either netted or leather door pockets base on the model and options you had chosen.
A “Loose Gas Cap” indicator light has been added to the instrument cluster to inform drivers if your gas cap is not fully locked.
smart will also be making some changes when it comes to your roof your smart can come with, they decided to axe the optional panoramic roof option on the smart pure and give smart passion owners a choice between the panoramic roof or a solid roof at no extra charge.
Prices for the 2009 Smart’s have not yet been confirmed but trends in Europe would lean towards a 2 to 3 percent increase.
Finally, some good news for the inpatient reservation holders out there, smart USA will be inviting small groups of reservation holders to participate in the Reservation Confirmation Program for the 2009 model in late August. So keep an eye on your inbox for more information regarding this.

Smart USA Recalls 43 Units
August 23, 2008
Here’s a recall you don’t see terribly often: Smart USA is recalling a handful of 2008 ForTwos because a batch of defective paint may lead to the roof or the windshield flying off.
The recall only affects 43 units, and the bizarre nature of the paint problem points to the car’s unique construction methods. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the faulty paint was applied to the Smart’s chassis and Tridion safety cell framework. Apparently, the paint is a delaminating risk, and if the paint comes apart near the portion where the windshield and roof are adhesive-mounted, they could separate from the rest of the car. According to NHTSA, “This could cause a crash if the roof or windshield separated from the vehicle while in motion.”
Yikes. Owners of the affected ForTwos can look forward to having their Smarts repainted at dealers.
